Bit.ly API Version 3

Yesterday, the bit.ly team introduced Version 3 of the API for the URL shortening service. This version is still under development and new features will be added as and when they are prime-time ready, but there are already some welcome changes over the current version.

Some of the new features will result in a significant performance improvement in Linkie as I’m now able to reduce the number of API calls required to refresh the history list and click counts by an order of magnitude. Preliminary testing is going well and the improved refresh time is simply quite astounding.

There is no word on whether the current last 15 items limit will be increased, but I’m hoping the bit.ly guys come good and open up the API so you access as much of your data as like you. One user has already commented in the App Store that they would like to see and I’m assuming many more would also welcome the increase.

The current plan is to adopt bit.ly API v3 in Linkie 1.1, but as yet I don’t have a timescale for its release.

I’m very happy to announce that Linkie 1.0 is now available in the App Store. I’ve been working on this for a couple of months now and it’s great to see it out in the world.
